Healthy Kids Coalition Past Events
Past events have been part of the Let’s Move! campaign, a comprehensive initiative launched by First Lady Michelle Obama. Let’s Move! is dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity by fostering environments that support healthy choices such as exercising and eating healthy.
Chefs Move to Schools:
We recently implemented a project called Chef Moves to Schools, a USDA campaign initiated by First Lady Michelle Obama, in which a chef works with students to prepare and serve healthy, sustainable food. Find out more about this project here.
Frisbee Spring Fling:
In the spring of 2013, Sustainable Westford’s Healthy Kids Coalition partnered with the Westford Health Department, Lowell General Hospital, and the Upper Merrimack Valley Medical Reserve Corps for some disc-flyin’ fun at the Frisbee Spring Fling. Todd Brodeur, a two-time world freestyle frisbee champion, educated families about the importance of living a healthy, active live while demonstrating many flying disc tricks, catches and combinations. Todd displayed his extensive frisbee collection and shared his knowledge about the origins of the flying disc. Finally, he held a fun, interactive frisbee playshop for children of all ages. His demonstration included a Q&A session, photographs, and an autograph signing. Learn more about Todd and his amazing frisbee tricks here.
Jump Rope Jive:
In the winter of 2013, Sustainable Westford’s Healthy Kids Coalition partnered with the Westford Health Department and Lowell General Hospital for a fun and exciting jump rope demonstration. Rene Bibaud, a five-time jump rope world champion, ESPN commentator and former artist at Cirque Du Soleil, educated, motivated and demonstrated the benefits of what she calls the single best fitness tool: the jump rope! Rene shared her life experiences with the audience while performing fun, interactive jump rope skills and dynamic hands-on lessons for all ages. Rene’s presentation included lots of audience participation as well as time for Q&A, photos, and autograph signing. Check out Rene here.
Circus Yoga:
In the fall of 2012 Sustainable Westford’s Healthy Kids Coalition partnered with the Westford Health Department and Lowell General Hospital for an evening of easy exercise and silly antics as well as high flying acrobatics! Family members of all ages learned yoga stretches and exercises and how to use them for entertainment and fun as they partnered to do everything from mimic to balance to lift and invert one another. Kevin and Erin Maile O’Keefe ran a relaxed, playful, energized workshop where many generations shared a challenging yet attainable experience. Check out Kevin’s & Erin’s programs here.
